World Apathy As Another Nakba Unfolds In Palestine

Published

on

As the siege and relentless aerial bombardment of Gaza is unfolding before the eyes of the world with thousands of palestanains being killed and tens of thousands injured on a daily basis and entire families being wiped from the civil registry, a question begs an answer, why is the world seemingly unperturbed, watching idly by?

Not the death toll or the destruction that is alarming; it is a fact that Palestinians are being erased, once again, from the map and Israel isn't even being accused of massacres.

The global discourse concerning the ongoing assault on Gaza is gradually but undeniably shifting towards the annexation of yet another part of historic Palestine by Israel, another Nakba.

It is not a fight to prevent this injustice, but rather a rush to ensure that the Palestinians who will undoubtedly become refugees again in the process won't find refuge anywhere else.

The world appears more concerned with the inconvenience of housing displaced Palestinians than accepting them with open arms. It's a shame that Jordan and Egypt closed their doors to Palestinians.

Today, for Palestinians, the looming fear of what the future holds has eclipsed the cruelty of the world's apparent indifference to their suffering.

This time, what we are witnessing can no longer be described as genocide or even ethnic cleansing; it transcends mass extermination—it is a total erasure.

It is not just the Palestinian people or the name of the country that is vanishing; it is the very concept of Palestine itself.

Palestine is being systematically eradicated from our collective consciousness and discourse, whether during war or in times of “peace.”

Remarkably, the Abraham Accords, a so-called landmark agreement brokered by the United States to normalize relations between Arab states and Israel, conspicuously manages to omit the central aggrieved party: the Palestinian population. One would assume that the Palestinian plight, which has long been portrayed as the primary obstacle to peace in the region, would make the Palestinian people a critical—if not the central—stakeholder in such a momentous deal. Yet, in the eyes of the Abraham Accords, the Palestinians appear to be non-existent.

Ironically, Israel stands before the United Nations, year after year, pleading for protection from the so-called "barbarian" nations that allegedly seek to wipe it from the map.

The irony of this situation is not perplexing, but indeed a real hypocrisy.

As the world continues to bear witness to the ongoing tragedy in Palestine, it is imperative that we confront this erasure head-on. The suffering and displacement of the Palestinian people cannot be allowed to continue unnoticed.

The world must acknowledge that the plight of Palestine is not merely a regional concern but a global one. To prevent the total erasure of Palestine, it is incumbent upon all nations to engage in meaningful dialogue and seek lasting solutions that address the fundamental rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people.

Otherwise, no one would prevent the erasure of an entire nation and its people from the pages of history.
