Srinagar: Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) Jammu and Kashmir, the representative amalgam of many religious social and educational organisations in Kashmir has strongly objected against the enforcement of singing Hindu hymns in schools of the Muslim majority region of Kashmir, as can be seen in a viral clip on social media at a government high school in Nagam area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam.

In a statement, the amalgam has termed the matter as a cause of serious concern and an attempt to undermine religious identity.

Recently, school students including hijab clad girls were seen chanting Hindu holy bhajan (hymns/devotional song), the video went viral on social media with PDP President of J&K’s former CM Mehbooba Mufti also denouncing the activity.

The hymn was as follows: “Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram Patita Pavana Sitaram Praise King Ram, Lord of the Raghu dynasty Praise Sita Ram, who purify even the sinners.”

Meanwhile, Majlis-e-Ulema said the interferences in religious by the government through the guise of educational activities will neither be accepted nor tolerated.

“It is becoming clear that there seems to be a deliberate plan to push our young generation through state run educational institutions towards apostasy , to wean them away from Islamic beliefs and identity , to speed their so called  “integration”, with the Hindutva idea of India. This is a very serious matter,” MMU said.

Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema said that efforts to browbeat Muslim Ulemas and scholars and weaken their influence  in J&K is being carried out as the recent spate of arrests of respected Ulemas (preachers) and religious heads and invoking of PSA against them including the continued detention of MMU patrons and Mirwaiz of Kashmir  for last three years.
