Srinagar, March 5 — Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Tuesday condemned a BJP legislator’s remarks in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, where he referred to Kashmir’s martyrs as “traitors.”
“These martyrs, who laid down their lives in cold blood while standing up for the rights and dignity of the oppressed people of Jammu and Kashmir, are revered by one and all,” Mirwaiz said.
“Any attempt to malign their sacrifice will be firmly resisted by the people.”
Mirwaiz called the remarks “outrageous” and said they insult the collective memory of Kashmiris.
“The people of Kashmir have a long history of struggle for their rights, and their sacrifices will not be disrespected,” he added.
The BJP legislator’s statement has drawn sharp reactions from political parties who stressed that honoring the July 13 martyrs is an integral part of Kashmir’s history.
