Lawmakers Seek Transparency in Beerwah Water Projects

Srinagar, March 5 — In the J&K Legislative Assembly, lawmakers on Wednesday raised concerns over the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), questioning transparency and stating that many areas still lack proper water supply despite the approval of 38 water supply schemes for the Beerwah constituency.

While the government claims 24 schemes have been completed and work is ongoing on 14, legislators demanded a probe, alleging irregularities.

During Question Hour, Minister for Jal Shakti Javed Rana told the House that ₹113.19 crore had been allocated for Beerwah’s water projects, with ₹64.29 crore spent so far. However, MLA Dr. Mohammad Shafi Wani expressed dissatisfaction, stating that implementation had not met expectations.

Other legislators, including Congress MLA Nizamuddin Bhat, NC’s Ali Mohammad Dar, AAP’s Mehraj Malik, BJP’s Baldev Raj, and Congress leader G.A. Mir, also criticized the mission’s handling, questioning why several areas remained without access to proper water supply despite project approvals.

Amid calls for a House committee to investigate the issue, the Minister assured an inquiry into an alleged contractor-department nexus in the specific constituency.

He also stated that officials responsible for providing incorrect responses would face action.
