Srinagar, March 24 — At least eight people, including four juveniles, were detained in Srinagar for allegedly misusing social media to glorify militancy, promote extremist ideologies, and spread anti-national propaganda, according to police.
Cyber Police Srinagar said in a statement that it identified the suspects during surveillance and patrolling of online platforms. "Eight individuals operating adverse social media handles were found posting content that promoted terrorism and extremist views," a police spokesman said.
Four adult suspects—Sajad Ahmad Lone of Herpora Parigam, Kulgam; Zuhaib Zahoor of Brein Nishat, Srinagar; Abrar Mushtaq of Nawabazar, Srinagar; and Farhad Rasool of Check Dara, Harwan, Srinagar—were detained for questioning.
The four juveniles involved in similar activities were counseled and handed over to their parents but will remain under close surveillance, police said.
Cyber Police Srinagar warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone misusing social media. "Any attempt to promote secessionist ideologies or spread misinformation against national integrity will be dealt with firmly," the statement added.
