Srinagar: As the crescent moon which marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan was not sighted by the Tamir Observatory on Tuesday evening in Saudi Arabia, Therefore, Wednesday, March 22, would be the last day of the month of (the Islamic month name) Sha'ban, and the holy month would begin from Thursday, March 23.
The Islamic calendar is usually 29 or 30 days and the beginning and end of the holy month of Ramadan depend on the sighting of the crescent moon, which is why Ramadan is not set on any specific days annually.
Ramadan is holy for Muslims across the globe as Muslims believe the Holy Quran was revealed to the last prophet of Islam, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in this month.
In this holy month, Muslims observe fast from sunrise (Fajr) to sunset (Maghreb), it is also one of the five pillars of Islam and a mandatory practice unless one is sick or traveling. During the fast; (from sunrise (Fajr) to sunset (Maghreb), smoking and sexual intimacy are also prohibited.
