Rajouri: A Village Defence Committee (VDC) member fired upon ‘suspicious persons’ near his house on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, following which Police and Army have launched a CASO (Cardon and search operation) in Shahpur village of Budhal area in J&K’s Rajouri district.
VDC (Village Defence Committee) now renamed as Village Defence Guards (VDG) was formed in the mid-90s along the remote hilly villages of Jammu region including Kishtwar, Doda, Reasi, Ramban, Poonch and Rajouri. VDC members are civilians, recruited and trained to help the government against militancy, the process was revived in March this year.
However, official sources said that the VDC member fired after observing some suspicious movement near his house and some stones were also pelted toward his house.
They added that after the incident army and police reached to the spot and cordoned off the area.
As per local sources, the VDC member who is a local of the area, fired upon the ‘suspects’ using his .303 rifle and over a dozen gunshots were heard.
Soon after the incident, army and police teams from Kandi and Budhal police stations reached the spot and launched a cordon and searches operation, as per the updated reports.
