Saudi Arabia has announced the discovery of new gold and copper ore sites in the Medina region on Thursday.
While the gold ore was found within the boundaries of Aba al-Raha area in the Medina region, the copper ore was discovered across four sites in the al-Madiq area, also in the Medina region of the country.
Earlier, in January, Professor Abdulaziz bin Labon, Chairman of the Saudi Geologists Cooperative Association said that Saudi Arabia is home to over 5,300 mineral locations. These reportedly include diverse metal and non-metal rocks, building materials, decorative rocks and gemstones.
Medina is considered to be the second-holiest of three key cities in Islam with Mecca and Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem serving as the holiest and third-holiest cities respectively. Medina is also home to Al-Masjid al-Nabawias mosque built in 622 CE by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which also serves as the burial site of the last prophet of Islam.
The region comprises 293 km2 (113 sq mi) of urban area, while the rest is subsumed by the Hejaz Mountains, empty valleys, agricultural spaces and older dormant volcanoes.
