Russia’s foreign ministry on Monday sanctioned 39 United Kingdom officials, business men and journalists and barred them from entering Russia.
The list includes opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer and former Prime Minister David Cameron, Reuters Reported.
The development came after 42 designations of Russia were sanctioned in the Luhansk and Donetsk provinces in eastern Ukraine as well as 29 regional governors across Russia last week.
Britain sanctions included Russia’s minister and deputy minister of justice, and two nephews of Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who was himself sanctioned by Britain in March.
Since the war in Ukraine began in February, the diplomacy between Russia and western countries changed rapidly across globe. While Russia is closing ties with non-western nations, the US, EU and NATO sided against Russia. The western countries imposed sanctions on Russia to isolate the country from global economy.
On the 159th day of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, thousands of people have taken to public squares and Russian embassies across the globe to protest against the invasion.
Moreover, a report by OVD-Info, which has documented crackdowns on Russia’s opposition for years, says more than 5,000 demonstrators have been arrested across Russia since the war was launched.
