Srinagar: Government medical College, Srinagar organised (Continuing Medical Education) CME workshop on the World Rabies Day i.e. 28 September in collaboration with SKUAST-K and Srinagar municipal corporation with One Health- No Death theme on Wednesday.
The world rabies day is commemorated on the death anniversary of Louis Pasteur, a French microbiologist who discovered rabies vaccine.
Rabies is a preventable viral disease most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system of mammals, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death.
The CME program was organised by department of Community Medicine GMC Srinagar under aegis of J&K Chapters of IAPSM and IPHA, APCRI and Consortium against rabies, GMC Srinagar said in a statement to The Himalayan Post.
The program inaugurated by Dr. S. Muhammad Salim Khan, professor and HOD, Community Medicine and organising chairman of the CME while lectures were delivered by faculty of community medicine and guest faculty from SKUAST-K and SMC, it said.
Dr. Waseem Raja, assistant professor and organising secretary gave an overview of rabies and animal bite cases globally, nationally and locally while Dr. Sheikh Akram Hussain, professor and HOD, veterinary public health from faculty of veterinary sciences, SKUAST-K, Shuhama talked on Rabies zero by 2030, call for one health, it reads.
Dr. Tawheed Ahmad Najar, Municipal veterinary officer, SMC discussed the population management of stray dogs and the role of SMC.
Moreover, Dr. Farooq Ahmad Kaloo, former director, animal husbandry department, Kashmir who was co-chairing the sessions with Prof. Mohammad Altaf Bhat, professor of veterinary microbiology and immunology, SKUAST-K deliberated on the role of veterinarians in management of stray dogs.
Dr. Kouser Sideeq, lecturer Community Medicine and organising secretary discussed management of animal exposure while Dr. Tanveer Hussain Baba, consultant at the Department of Neurology, Super Speciality Hospital, GMC Srinagar shared management protocols of rabies cases.
A poster competition was also conducted which was judged by Prof. Anjum Farhana, HOD microbiology, Prof. G M Bhat, HOD Anatomy and Prof. Sheikh Bilal Ahmed, HOD Pathology, GMC Srinagar.
The position holders were awarded and the first positions was won by Khubaib Mohammad Murtafa and Suhaib Farooq Peerzada (of GMC Srinagar), second prize by Azra Malik (GMC Srinagar) and third position by Hussnain Mir (GUMC Ganderbal) and Oufaq zehra (GMC).
The CME was observed by Prof. Suhail Ahmad represented J&K Medical Council who awarded four Credit Hours to the CME.
Various medical and para medical colleges, hospitals and health centres of Kashmir participated in the event.
The CME was coordinated by Dr. Khalid Bashir, Dr. Abdul Rouf and Dr. Tanzeela Bashir, senior residents from department of Community Medicine GMC Srinagar while comparing was done by intern doctors Insha Majeed and Shoaib Mushtaq, it concludes.
