Srinagar: Jammu-Srinagar highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with the world has been closed due to fresh snowfall, landslides and shooting stones around the NVYUG tunnel, officials said on Wednesday. Moreover, almost all flights were either cancelled or delayed at the Srinagar International airport.
“We are having continuous snowfall at our airport. Our snow clearing operations are also in continuous progress on runway and apron. However the visibility is only 400M,” an AAI official said.
However, Jammu-Srinagar highway has beenclosed for vehicular movement due to landslides and shooting stones at many places on the thoroughfare and snow accumulation around the NVYUG Tunnel,” an official of the traffic department here told GNS.
Hundreds of vehicles including at least around 300-Kashmir bound trucks, carrying essentials and other supplies, are stranded at Banihal alone, official sources said.
The traffic department officials had urged commuters not to travel on the thoroughfare without confirming its status traffic control units either at Ramban TCU or Srinagar in view of inclement weather prediction issued by meteorological department.
Meanwhile, Mughal Road, connecting Kashmir with the Pirpanchal valley also remained closed for vehicular movement in view of snow accumulation at Peer Ki Gali.
Also, Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road remained shut for vehicular movement in view of snow accumulation on Zoji la axis and has been closed till further orders. Kishtwar-Sinthan road also remained closed in view of snow accumulation, the traffic department official said.
