Samba: A man in Jammu division’s Samba district has been apprehended on charges of impersonating an army officer and making an attempt to sexually assault a Class 12 girl, according to officials.
The suspect, identified as Sham Lal from Ramgarh, was arrested by the police in Vijaypur, as stated by Samba Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Benam Tosh, PTI reported.
The complaint, filed by the girl, alleges that Lal, posing as an army Colonel, lured her and her brother from Udhampur to Vijaypur under the false promise of NCC enrolment and recruitment into a paramilitary force.
Lal purportedly assessed their physical fitness along Vijaypur-Ramgarh road and, at midnight, tried to assault the girl, as per the complaint.
The victim sought police intervention. SSP Tosh noted that a case has been registered at the Vijaypur police station under sections 376 (rape), 511 (attempt to commit offenses punishable with imprisonment), and 419 (cheating by personation) of the Indian Penal Code.
An ongoing investigation is in progress, he said.
