Baramulla, Feb 6: A Kashmiri youth from Sopore, who was driving a truck, was killed by the troops in a ‘firing incident’ after allegedly bypassing a security checkpoint near the Nexa Showroom in Sangrama, north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, on Thursday.
An official identified the deceased as Waseem Ahmad Mir, son of Abdul Majeed Mir, a resident of Goripora Bomai, Sopore.
According to a military statement, a Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) was set up on February 5, 2025, based on specific intelligence inputs regarding militant movement.
“A civilian truck approached the checkpoint at high speed and failed to stop despite repeated warnings, instead accelerating further,” it said.
Forces pursued the vehicle for over 23 km before firing at its tyres to deflate them, bringing the truck to a halt at Sangrama Chowk.
"Upon a detailed search, the injured driver was immediately shifted to GMC Baramulla, where he was declared dead," the statement added.
A search of the vehicle is ongoing, and authorities are probing the driver’s background, the military said.
A police official confirmed the incident, stating that an FIR has been registered and a thorough investigation is underway. "Any attempt to disrupt public order or spread false information will be dealt with strictly," he added.
