New Delhi: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has unanimously elected caretaker Prime Minister Narendra Modi as its leader after a meeting was held in New Delhi on Wednesday (June 5), which was attended by a total of 21 leaders.

The meeting follows the BJP's inability to secure a clear majority independently, as it attained 240 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the outcomes of which were disclosed on Tuesday.

The alliance's pivotal players include the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)), helmed by Nitish Kumar, and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), under Chandrababu Naidu's leadership. Their support is instrumental for Narendra Modi's bid for a third term. However, their history of joining and leaving the NDA coalition before elections introduces an element of unpredictability, despite the NDA currently holding 286 seats compared to the INDIA bloc's 231 seats.

Narendra Modi is expected to be sworn in as India's Prime Minister for a third term on June 8, as per media reports. As per the report, the new cabinet will also take oath on the same day.
