Jammu, Jan 12: National Conference President Farooq Abdullah criticized the BJP for what he termed "ill-conceived policies" that have strained Jammu’s economy, asserting that an Omar Abdullah-led government would prioritize leveraging the region's tourism potential to restore economic growth.
Addressing a gathering at Charwa-Mansar near Jammu, Abdullah mention the region's untapped potential and said reversing the development setbacks of the past decade requires time and strategic focus.
“The Omar-led government, from day one, prioritised Jammu’s development by appointing key cabinet members from the area,” he stated, calling for a comprehensive tourism policy.
Farooq Abdullah proposed a well-structured tourism circuit featuring Shiv Khori, Utterbehni-Purmandal, Patnitop, Mansar, Bagh-e-Bahu, Suchetgarh Border, and other scenic locations in Doda, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, and Kathua.
He stressed the need for itineraries encouraging longer tourist stays to boost local economic activity.
“Hidden gems like Mansar Lake must be promoted with strategic measures to ensure sustainable growth,” Abdullah said, calling for robust infrastructure and initiatives to transform Jammu into a premier tourist destination.
During his visit, public delegations raised concerns about neglected tourism infrastructure, inadequate basic utilities, and deteriorating road conditions. Many pointed out the worsening state of Mansar Lake, urging immediate cleanup efforts to enhance its appeal.
A party spokesperson echoed these concerns, adding that locals felt overlooked by successive administrations since 2015.
Residents urged measures to improve road connectivity and ensure better electricity and water access to attract visitors and stimulate growth in the region.
