Leh, Apr 27 — The Ladakh administration on Monday notified the creation of five new districts—Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass—raising the total number in the region to seven, days before Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit.
The announcement was made by Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, who described it as a “historic day” and said the decision addresses a long-pending demand.
According to the Lt Governor’s office, the move had received approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs in August 2024.
“The creation of new districts will strengthen grassroots governance, decentralise administration and ensure faster delivery of public services, particularly in remote and far-flung areas,” Saxena said.
Ladakh earlier had two districts—Leh and Kargil. With the addition of the five new units, the administrative framework is expected to expand closer to local populations across the region.
Shah is scheduled to visit Ladakh later this week.
