Qazigund, Jan 28: The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway was partially reopened for traffic on Wednesday after remaining shut for a day due to heavy snowfall, officials said, as efforts continued to clear stranded vehicles at several locations in Qazigund.

Authorities said priority was being given to stranded light motor vehicles to ease congestion and restore movement along the 270-kilometre highway.

“Light motor vehicles that were stuck at different points in Qazigund are being cleared first to ensure smooth and safe passage,” officials said.

They said snow clearance operations were ongoing on vulnerable stretches, with salt and urea being spread at identified locations to reduce the risk of skidding and improve road safety.

“The highway will be opened in a phased manner, depending on weather conditions and road safety assessments,” officials said.

The highway had been closed on Tuesday following heavy snowfall across the region.

Commuters were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and check official traffic advisories before starting their journey.

Meanwhile, flight operations at Srinagar International Airport resumed on Wednesday morning after being temporarily suspended due to poor visibility caused by snowfall.

“Arrivals and departures to and from the airport are now back on schedule, easing travel for stranded passengers,” officials said, adding that travelers have been advised to stay in touch with airlines as weather conditions remain unpredictable.
