SRINAGAR, Sep 28: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a resolution calling upon the Government of India for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
The resolution, moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday, was passed amid strong opposition from BJP legislators, who had objected to references to autonomy and the pre-1953 position in the text.
As the resolution was put to vote, BJP legislators walked out of the House in protest.
The resolution states that the House “calls upon the Government of India for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and resolves that it be forwarded to the Government of India.”
The BJP had earlier raised objections to what its legislators described as references to autonomy in the resolution, leading to repeated disruptions and protests during the Assembly proceedings.
The resolution was subsequently put to vote after the protests, with the BJP members staging a walkout.
With the listed business for the day completed, the Assembly was later adjourned and will reconvene on Tuesday.
