New Delhi, Sept 11: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Friday for a three-day visit to India, as the national capital gears up to host the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13.
Putin is scheduled to attend the summit and hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with bilateral discussions expected to focus on expanding trade, investment and energy cooperation.
His visit marks his first in-person participation in a BRICS summit outside Russia since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022.
Putin is accompanied by a high-level delegation and is among several world leaders and senior representatives arriving in New Delhi ahead of the two-day summit.
Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira also arrived in the capital to represent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the summit. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed Vieira’s arrival, noting that Lula remains in Brazil for his election campaign.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi are also expected to attend.
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung are among other senior leaders scheduled to participate in the summit.
The leaders are expected to discuss a range of issues concerning economic cooperation, trade, investment, energy and broader coordination among BRICS members.
