Udhampur Man Arrested for Alleged Bid to Breach Police Check Post in Ramban

Driver accused of trying to run over naka personnel; Scorpio seized, forensic examination underway

Ramban, Aug 7: Police on Friday arrested a man from Udhampur district for allegedly attempting to breach a security check post and run over police personnel in Ramban, prompting an officer to fire three warning shots, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Arun Gupta said.

Addressing a press conference, Gupta said the accused has been identified as Altaf Mohammad, son of Barkat Ali, a resident of Krimchy, Mansar in Udhampur district. The black Scorpio SUV (JK02AK-1743) used in the incident has also been recovered and seized.

According to the SSP, the vehicle approached the cut-off naka at Kunfer, Chanderkote, after entering from the JP Gate Link Road. Despite repeated signals to stop for routine checking, the driver allegedly accelerated towards the checkpoint.

โ€œThe driver deliberately ignored the naka and attempted to run over the naka personnel. Sensing an imminent threat to the lives of the security personnel, the guard on duty fired three warning shots,โ€ Gupta said.

Police have registered an FIR at Police Station Chanderkote under Sections 109, 132 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Following the incident, Ramban Police, the Special Operations Group (SOG), the CRPF and the Army launched a joint search operation, leading to the arrest of the accused.

Gupta said the District Mobile Forensic Unit has collected forensic evidence from the seized vehicle, while further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
