US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold a virtual summit on Monday as tensions between the countries deepen on the military confrontation over Taiwan.
Some US official intelligence has also blamed China for not co-operating in the laboratory when the origins could help end the pandemic.
While Biden has maintained that Beijing needs to co-operate more with international investigations but China has rejected such calls.
Reportedly, other subjects including Cyber-security, trade and nuclear non-proliferation will also be discussed on the table.
The competing superpowers surprised many last week by issuing a joint declaration to address climate change, at talks in Glasgow, Scotland and the duo had spoken twice since Mr Biden took office in January, but also acknowledged bumps in the relationship.
For America, Taiwan is likely to top the agenda. Biden wants Xi to pledge for maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait, as Beijing has shown growing willingness to intensify military pressure on the island. But for Beijing, Taiwan is the renegade province that it has always wanted to fully reunite with the "motherland."
