New Delhi: ‘Gangster’-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead on Saturday night in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj (earlier called Allahabad) when they were being taken for a medical check-up in police custody, media reports said.
As per reports, the firing took place inside MLN Medical College premises.
The three killers of the Ahmad brothers, ‘who posed as journalists’ in the middle of a media interaction, have been detained and identified, as per UP Police.
The assailants have been identified as Arun Maurya, Lavlesh Tiwari and Sunny Singh. However, no official statement on their names was issued.
The shooting was caught on camera as media persons were following the two being escorted to the hospital by police for a medical check-up around 10pm.
In the videos, the attackers were heard shouting “Jai Shri Ram” (hail lord ram, now a Hindutva slogan) while shooting Atiq and his brother.
