Parliamentary Polls: ECI to Visit J&K on March 12-13

Srinagar: The Election Commission of India is preparing the visit J&K between March 12 and 13, to supervise the preparation for Lok Sabha (Parliamentary) elections, scheduled in April-May 2024, sources said on Friday.

As per the details shared by sources, ECI members are expected to meet different stakeholders, including representatives of different political parties, officials from the Administrative Department and the Police.

โ€œMoreover, the members could also evaluate the feasibility of up-holding the Assembly elections in J&K as the deadline of Sep-2024, set by SCI in its last verdict on Articles 370 and 35A on Jan 11, 2023.โ€ย

Additionally, it is pertained to note that J&K has been without an elected government since June 19 2018, when BJP withdrew its support from the Mufti-led coalition government.ย

Later on, on August 5 2019 GOI, revoked Articles 370 and 35A and bifurcated the whole state of J&K into two union territories.ย

In addition to the report, ECI lastly visited J&K in November 2014 to review the assembly polls, when the erstwhile state was under the government of JKNC.ย
