Man Killed For Dining With ‘Upper Caste’ People In Uttarakhand

In Champawat district of India’s Uttarakhand, a 45-year-old man, ram was beaten to death by ‘upper caste’ people for dining with everyone at a wedding.

The victim’s family said the man was physically tortured for several hours before he was shifted to Lohaghat hospital and from there to another hospital in Haldwani where he succumbed.

The Champawat Police has registered a case of murder and added various relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

People there see eating with a dalit man in violation of casteist norms prevalent locally, reportedly, it was not the first incident in Uttrakhand where dalits succumbed after beaten by ‘upper caste’ people.

An FIR (first information report) has also been registered against unknown persons, but no arrests have been made yet.

The deceased was running a tailor shop in Champawat’s Pati block, Nanital Uttrakhand, a state in northern India crossed by the Himalayas.
