New Delhi: The Election Commission of India on Monday said polls in Jammu and Kashmir will be held at the “right time” keeping in mind the “security situation.”
Replying to a query about J&K polls during the presser about elections in five states of India, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar, said, “the polls in Jammu and Kashmir will be held when the commission deems it the “right time” keeping in mind the “security situation.”
Subsequently, ECI announced dates of polls for five states—Chattisgrah, Mizoram, Madhaya Pradesh, Telangana and Rajasthan.
It is Pertinent to mention that J&K has been under president’s rule since June 2018.
On August 5 2019, India scrapped Article 370 and bifurcated the erstwhile State into two “Union Territories”
While Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on the floor of the parliament that Statehood will be restored to J&K once the situation comes to normal, Unionists including the National Conference, Congress and J&K Apni Party have been vociferously demanding the restoration of statehood to J&K forthwith so that elections are held in the region.
