Srinagar: Intense cold conditions prevailed in J&K and Ladakh with Gulmarg, the world-famous skiing resort, being the coldest place in the Kashmir Valley.
A meteorological department said the minimum temperature in Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K, settled at minus 2.7°C.
Kashmir is presently under the grip of 40-day long harshest winter, known locally as ‘Chillai Kalan, which started on December 21 followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day-long (baby cold) ‘Chilla Bach.’
Such a harsh winter period grips the region and the temperature drops considerably leading to the freezing of water bodies, as well as the water supply lines in several parts of the valley.
North Kashmir’s Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 11.0°C, South Kashmir’s Pahalgam froze at minus 9.4°C against minus 11.6°C last night.
Qazigund, – 5.8°C, Kokernag, – 6.1°C, Kupwara, – 2.5°C.
The weatherman has forecast dry weather at most places in Jammu and Kashmir till January 16.
