Srinagar, May 8 — Srinagar Police have initiated legal proceedings against three individuals for posting content on social media, deemed provocative by authorities, amid the ongoing escalation between India and Pakistan.
The police said that the action followed reports from “credible agencies” about social media posts that could disrupt public peace and order.
The individuals have been identified as Inayat Hussain Rather from Pampore, Rather Arif from Anantnag, and Sheikh Umar Farooq from Budgam.
They have been booked under FIR No. 14/2025 at Shergarhi Police Station under sections 197(1)(d) and 353(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the police statement, preliminary observations suggest that the content in question includes “fabricated narratives and sensitive material” possibly linked to ongoing military operations.
Authorities noted that while the intent behind the posts remains under investigation, such content could potentially be used to spread fear or confusion among the public.
“Certain unidentified individuals, acting in furtherance of a larger enemy design, are systematically disseminating misinformation and inflammatory content,” the police said in a statement, without confirming whether the three individuals were directly responsible for spreading misinformation or acting with specific intent.
The police noted that such posts may have already caused unease in some sections of the civilian population and have the potential to disturb law and order.
Officials appealed citizens to refrain from sharing unverified content online and report ‘suspicious material to authorities.’
“Srinagar Police remains committed to preserving peace and ensuring the security of all residents,” the statement added. “Any individual found promoting disruption or unlawful activity will face legal consequences.”
