Aligarh: A Muslim man, identified as Mohammad Farid, also known as Aurangzeb, was lynched to death by a group of men in the Mamu Bhanja area of Gandhi Park in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, over alleged suspicions of theft.
The crime took place at around 1 a.m. when onlookers ‘mistook him for a thief’, and beat with sticks until he died, according to Police.
Police said they intervened and shifted the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Protests have erupted in the area, with political leaders from various parties, including the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, along with the victim’s family members, participating in a sit-in and demanding the immediate arrest of the accused.
Authorities have deployed personnel from multiple police stations in the area and are reviewing video footage to identify the perpetrators. Superintendent of Police Mrigank Shekhar Pathak said that a case under IPC section 302 (murder) has been registered, with four arrests made, and pledged that all involved criminals will be prosecuted.
