Srinagar/New Delhi: Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Member of Parliament from the Srinagar constituency, has formally requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to facilitate the release of Jammu and Kashmir prisoners currently held without trial in various Indian jails.

Ruhullah, in a representation to the Minister of Home Affairs, conveyed that as a “representative of Jammu and Kashmir,” he would like to bring to their attention that several people from different regions of the valley have been incarcerated. Many of these individuals are either convicted, undertrial, or being held without trial in various parts of the country. He further noted that most of the prisoners held without trial are young individuals.

“It is unfair on the part of the government to hold these people at an age that is decisive for their career and nation-building. Therefore, I believe their release is imperative and call upon the government to release the prisoners held without trial at the earliest.”

Citing the issue of differing weather conditions between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of India, the Member of Parliament from JKNC further conveyed to the MHA that, “The weather conditions in the Kashmir province of Jammu and Kashmir are different from those in the rest of the nation. Therefore, those prisoners who are convicted or undertrial should be shifted to the valley on humanitarian grounds. It is also difficult for the relatives of these prisoners to meet them in different parts of the country, both physically and financially.”
