Srinagar, Apr 29– Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire for the fifth
consecutive night along the Line of Control (LoC), with skirmishes reported across multiple locations in north Kashmir’s Baramulla and Kupwara districts, as well as the Akhnoor sector in the Jammu region during the night of April 28–29.
Officials said the firing occurred in Kupwara and Baramulla areas of north Kashmir and in the Akhnoor sector.
They noted that the firing was sudden and unprovoked from the Indian side.
The Indian military, according to officials, responded in a measured and effective manner, preventing escalation and safeguarding civilian areas near the LoC.
“No casualties or major damage have been reported on the Indian side so far, and the situation remains under control,” officials added.
Tensions have been rising since the April 22 attack on tourists in Pahalgam, with India suspending its participation in the
Indus Waters Treaty and Pakistan reportedly distancing itself from the
Shimla Agreement.
Experts warn that without the Shimla Agreement in place, both sides may begin altering ground positions along the LoC and feel increasingly incentivised to use force, in the absence of any binding peace framework.
