Leh, May 5 — The Leh Apex Body (LAB) has accepted the resignation of its chairman, Thupstan Chhewang, ahead of the May 22 talks between Ladakh representatives and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
In a statement issued on Monday, the body said the resignation, originally tendered on July 6, 2025, was accepted after deliberations, citing his prolonged absence from key meetings and internal differences.
“Members of the Leh Apex Body, after due deliberation, have decided to accept his resignation tendered on July 6, 2025,” the statement said.
It added that Chhewang had been unable to attend important meetings since that date due to health and personal reasons. The body also acknowledged that differences of opinion had emerged in recent months between him and other members, including during meetings with the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh and the Union Home Minister.
Despite accepting his resignation, the LAB unanimously urged Chhewang to continue as a primary member, recognising his “invaluable contribution” to Ladakh’s cause.
Sources indicated that internal differences had surfaced over key political and administrative demands being pursued by the body.
The leadership change comes ahead of a crucial round of talks scheduled for May 22 between Ladakh civil society groups and the Centre. Key demands expected to be raised include statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule.
The meeting will be the first since Vinai Kumar Saxena assumed office as Lieutenant Governor, replacing Kavinder Gupta. Since taking charge in March, Saxena has initiated outreach efforts and expressed confidence in the ongoing dialogue process.
