Katra, November 27: Two labour union leaders, including a Congress member, have been arrested following
protests in Katra over the proposed ropeway project connecting the town to the Vaishno Devi shrine, officials said.
Bhupinder Singh Jamwal, a prominent leader of the Pony and Pittuu Union and a Congress politician who recently contested assembly elections from the Vaishno Devi constituency, was among those detained, according to reports.
Another labour union leader, Sohan Chand, was also taken into custody.
The proposed ropeway has sparked widespread concerns among shopkeepers and labourers, who fear it could reduce footfall in the local market, affecting their livelihoods.
Police have booked several persons involved in the clashes, with further investigations underway.
