Srinagar, June 1 — Justice Sanjeev Kumar has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh following the elevation of Chief Justice Arun Palli to the Supreme Court of India.
The appointment was made by the President of India under Article 223 of the Constitution and was notified by the Ministry of Law and Justice on Monday.
According to the notification, Justice Sanjeev Kumar, who is currently serving as a judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, will perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice until further orders.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjeev Kumar, Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh consequent upon the appointment of Shri Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India,” the notification stated.
The development follows the appointment of Arun Palli to the Supreme Court, creating a vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
Justice Sanjeev Kumar will now oversee the functioning of the High Court in his capacity as Acting Chief Justice until a regular Chief Justice is appointed.
