Srinagar, Jan 12 — The Food Safety Department of Jammu and Kashmir has uncovered an illegal operation involved in the manufacture and sale of spurious honey and desi ghee in Srinagar, officials said.

Teams of the department carried out inspections and raids in the Barthana and Qamarwari areas, where they found a unit producing and supplying adulterated food items to the local market.

“Large quantities of hydrogenated oil, which was being mixed and sold as desi ghee, were recovered from the spot,” a senior official said.

Officials also seized sugar and other ingredients used to prepare a mixture that was being passed off as locally produced honey. “The material being used clearly showed that the products were being misrepresented and sold to consumers as genuine,” the official added.

The adulterated food was reportedly being supplied to different parts of the city. “Such products pose a serious risk, especially when they enter the daily food chain,” an official said.

Authorities have collected samples for laboratory analysis, and legal action will follow based on the test results, he added.
