Anantnag, Mar 26 — Allegations of expired glucose being administered to patients at Government Medical College Anantnag triggered panic among attendants on Thursday, with hospital authorities confirming a probe and terming the incident a case of negligence.

An official said preliminary findings point to a lapse by on-duty staff. “It is a clear case of negligence on part of the on-duty nurse, and appropriate action will be taken,” the official said.

Attendants claimed the issue surfaced after patients developed adverse reactions following intravenous administration. “We later checked and found that the glucose bottles had expired nearly a year ago. This is sheer negligence and could have cost lives,” an attendant said.

Hospital authorities said all affected patients are stable and under observation. “There is no cause for panic as all patients are fine. Still, we are closely monitoring their condition,” the official added.

Family members alleged broader lapses in oversight and demanded a comprehensive inquiry into procurement and storage systems. “Not just the nurse, but the entire supply chain must be investigated. How did expired stock reach the ward? Who cleared it?” another attendant said.

The administration has initiated a detailed inquiry, with officials saying accountability will be fixed at all levels. “If any other official is found involved, strict action will follow,” the official said.

Attendants also called for suspension of those responsible and regular audits of medicines and consumables to prevent recurrence.

Medical experts caution that administering expired intravenous fluids can lead to reduced efficacy, contamination risks and adverse reactions, potentially causing serious complications.
