Kulgam, 4 February 2025: As a former military personnel was killed by militants, hundreds have been detained for ‘questioning’ in south Kashmir's Kulgam, according to media reports.
A retired military man was killed and his family members, including his wife and niece, were injured in a suspected militant attack in south Kashmir’s Kulgam on Monday.
The retired personnel, Manzoor Ahmad, and his family members were fired upon by gunmen in Behibagh area of Kulgam, according to reports.
Officials said Ahmad succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The family members, who sustained injuries to their limbs, are said to be stable.
Officials said the gunmen, whose number could not be ascertained immediately, fired at the former trooper near his house.
Meanwhile, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha have condemned the attack.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic killing of ex-serviceman Manzoor Ahmad Wagay. My heartfelt condolences to his family, and prayers for the swift recovery of his injured wife and niece. Such heinous violence has no place in our society and must be condemned in the strongest terms,” Mr. Abdullah said in a post on X.
Mr. Sinha said the entire nation stands in solidarity with the bereaved family in this hour of grief. “I have instructed officials to provide the best possible treatment to the injured and pray for their speedy recovery. I assure the people that the perpetrators of this cowardly attack will be punished soon,” he stated.
Former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said she was terribly saddened by Wagay’s killing.
