New Delhi, May 18 — The Delhi High Court on Monday granted interim bail till June 2 to Baramulla MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid, who is lodged in Tihar Jail in a militancy-funding case, following the death of his father.
A bench of Justices Prathiba M Singh and Madhu Jain allowed the interim relief to enable Rashid to attend the funeral, perform burial rites and participate in customary ceremonies in Srinagar.
“Accordingly, due to the demise of the appellant’s father, interim bail is granted to the appellant until 2nd June, 2026,” the court said in its order.
Rashid had approached the court after informing it that his father, who was undergoing treatment at AIIMS, died on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.
The court directed that Rashid would remain under strict security supervision during the bail period. It ordered that he “shall always be accompanied by at least two police officials in plainclothes” from the time he leaves Tihar Jail until his return from Srinagar.
The bench further said he would be permitted to visit the burial ground and places of worship, but “shall not be permitted to move anywhere else”.
Engineer Rashid has been lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail since 2019 after his arrest by the National Investigation Agency in connection with a 2017 militancy-funding case.
The Baramulla MP is facing trial on allegations of funding separatist and militant groups in Jammu and Kashmir. After he was named in a chargesheet in October 2019, a special NIA court framed charges against him and others in March 2022 under IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy, waging war against the government and sedition, along with provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
