Boiler blast at Shopian cold store kills two non-local engineers

One critically injured; explosion occurred during repair work at fruit mandi facility

Shopian, Apr 30 — Two non-local engineers were killed and another critically injured after a steam boiler exploded at a cold storage facility in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday evening, officials said.

The explosion occurred at Zum Zum Cold Store in the Aglar Pinjura area while a boiler was under repair, leaving three engineers injured. All were shifted to District Hospital Shopian, where two later succumbed.

“One of the injured, identified as Saurabh Singh from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, died on arrival at the hospital,” an official said. “Another injured, Shiv Kumar, also succumbed during the night.”

The third engineer, Raj Kumar, remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment, officials said.

Preliminary information indicates the men were carrying out repair work when the boiler suddenly exploded. “The blast took place while the steam boiler was being repaired,” the official said, adding that further details are being ascertained.

Police have taken cognisance of the incident and initiated an investigation.
