Srinagar/Jammu, 20 November 2024– Freedom of speech cannot be used as a tool to challenge India’s sovereignty and integrity, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said on Wednesday while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Joint Edition of the Jammu Film Festival and the International Film Festival of Srinagar in Jammu.

He warned against individuals attempting to disturb peace in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring such activities.

“Everyone has the freedom to speak their mind,” Sinha said. “However, this freedom comes with constitutional limits and cannot be used to undermine the nation's sovereignty.”

Without naming anyone, the LG accused certain elements of spreading false propaganda to disrupt the ‘region’s calm.’ “Law will take its course against anyone attempting to disturb peace,” he cautioned.

He also warned against efforts to revive the unrest that existed before 2019, stating, “Those dreaming of chaos will face the consequences of the law.”

The LG encouraged filmmakers to use cinema as a tool for positive change. “Cinema is not just entertainment; it influences values and serves greater causes,” he said.

“Good films balance entertainment with social concerns, contributing to equality and justice while combating social evils.”
