New Delhi, Sep 7: The death toll in the collapse of a five-storey building housing a boys’ hostel in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area rose to six on Monday, with 11 people rescued from the debris as search and rescue operations continued at the site.
The nearly 50-year-old structure collapsed on Sunday afternoon in the congested area near Delhi University’s South Campus, trapping several people under the rubble.
Rescue teams remained at the site on Monday morning, clearing debris and checking whether anyone could still be trapped beneath the collapsed structure. Officials and emergency personnel were continuing the operation amid concerns that portions of the rubble could pose further risks.

As a precaution, authorities installed iron jacks to support Buildings 12 and 13 in the vicinity after they were assessed as vulnerable following the collapse.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has also issued notices to four nearby buildings as part of measures aimed at preventing further accidents in the area.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, BJP MLA Anil Sharma and other senior officials visited the site on Monday to monitor the rescue and relief operations.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of ageing and structurally vulnerable buildings in Satya Niketan, a densely populated locality with a large number of student accommodations, hostels and paying guest facilities.
Authorities are continuing to assess the condition of adjoining structures while rescue personnel work to complete the search operation.
