New Delhi, Oct 16: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and All India Students’ Association (AISA) activist Neha Bora were detained by Delhi Police on Friday while heading out for separate protests linked to the ongoing agitation against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Dipke was detained while on his way to Connaught Place for the CJP’s proposed ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ march, while Bora was detained near Mandi House shortly after beginning her march.
Earlier, Delhi Police had served a notice on Dipke, informing him that Connaught Place was not a notified site for protests and asking him not to hold the planned march.
The proposed gathering was to be held at Central Park in Connaught Place, where CJP supporters had been asked to assemble with the national flag.
The detentions come amid tensions following the remand of CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka to judicial custody. The two were arrested after allegedly entering Jantar Mantar on October 13, following the site’s de-notification for protests.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police has planned an extensive security deployment across the Lutyens’ area to prevent any untoward incident. More than 6,000 personnel are expected to be deployed, with another 5,000 personnel kept in reserve from other districts.
Security arrangements are being strengthened around Rajiv Chowk, Connaught Place markets, Central Park, nearby Metro stations, Jantar Mantar and Palika Bazaar.
The developments come amid continuing protests by CJP and other activists demanding accountability from the Election Commission and the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
