Gulmarg/Srinagar, March 12 — A 44-km road is being constructed through the Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary, which, according to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), will improve troop and vehicle movement to forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC).
The ₹288 crore project, expected to be completed in three years, will extend from Cheema to Leech Nallah in Baramulla, further connecting to the Gurdaligali and Sarson Army posts.
Most of the road will pass through the 180-square-kilometre sanctuary, whose elevation ranges from 2,400 to 4,300 meters, featuring dense forests and alpine meadows and home to species like the Himalayan brown bear and musk deer.
A BRO document said that the Defence Ministry has been focusing on road development in border areas, calling this project part of an accelerated infrastructure plan.
“There is no existing road from Cheema to Leech Nallah and to Gurdaligali and Sarson posts. The current Class 5 track is in poor condition and unsuitable for Army vehicles due to steep gradients," it stated.
