“From Lifeline to Dumping Ground”: Karfalli Mohalla’s Jhelum Channel in Crisis

Srinagar, Jan 5 A water channel linked to the Jhelum, passing through Karfalli Mohalla in Habba Kadal, has turned into an open dumping ground, raising concerns among local residents over sanitation, environmental damage, and public health risks.

Once used for irrigation and domestic needs, the channel is now clogged with plastic, household garbage, and construction debris, making it nearly non-functional, locals said. “This channel once served as a lifeline for our locality, providing clean flowing water and supporting daily needs. Today, it has become a source of disease due to official neglect,” a resident said.

The obstruction has caused stagnant water, foul odors, and increased mosquito breeding. “During warmer days, the stench intensifies, forcing us to keep doors and windows shut. Children, the elderly, and patients with respiratory or skin ailments are at serious risk,” another resident added.

Locals alleged that repeated complaints to authorities have gone unheeded. “If this continues, we fear outbreaks of water-borne diseases,” a resident warned.

They have urged district authorities and concerned departments to remove the accumulated waste, restore water flow, and ensure regular maintenance. Residents also called for strict action against illegal dumping and installation of warning signboards and surveillance to prevent further misuse.

“Continued inaction could lead to long-term environmental damage and serious public health emergencies. The issue requires urgent attention rather than further neglect,” a local said.
