BANDIPORA, 25 Nov. 24 –Migratory birds have started arriving in Kashmir for their annual winter migration, with Wullar Lake in northern Kashmir serving as a key stopover.
According to the Wullar Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA), birds from Europe and Asia travel to Wullar Lake and other South Asian regions during the non-breeding season, driven by changing weather conditions and the search for food.
“These migratory birds feed on fish, insects, small crustaceans, and aquatic invertebrates,” a WUCMA official said, adding that they display diverse foraging methods, including catching flying insects and searching for food in shallow waters.
A bird census is scheduled in the coming weeks to document the migratory population and identify any new or first-time sightings.
Moreover, WUCMA has announced plans to hold a Bird Festival and the Wullar Festival to explore the lake’s ecosystem and showcase its biodiversity.
Despite being a vital winter habitat for these migratory birds, Wullar Lake continues to face challenges, including pollution and human activities. The lake’s ecological balance remains fragile, with ongoing efforts by various stakeholders to address these issues.
