Srinagar: In response to multiple complaints regarding the construction of a road through saffron fields in Zafran Colony, on the outskirts of Srinagar, authorities said that swift action has been taken to address the issue.
Pampore area is famous for producing the finest saffron in the world. Saffron, often referred to as "the red gold," is a valuable spice derived from the flower of Crocus sativus, and it has been cultivated in Pampore for centuries.
News agency KNO quoted Tehsildar Pantha Chowk, Rakib Ahmed saying that an unauthorized road was being constructed in Zafran Colony, passing through saffron fields.
“In response to the complaints, immediate action was taken to close the illegal road, remove any fillings, and ensure that no traffic continued to use it, he said.
Also, the road was dug up at specific locations to prevent further use, he added.
An investigation has been launched, If needed, a formal FIR will be lodged as well, he said further.
Regarding the possibility of a larger group or mafia involvement in the illegal construction, Tehsildar Pantha Chowk noted: “As of now, we are verifying the facts, and the culprits are not known yet. The investigation is ongoing, and facts are being verified."
It’s important to note that under section 133-A of the J&K Land Revenue Act, Svt, 1996, land used for saffron cultivation is strictly reserved for agricultural purposes. Any use of such land for other purposes requires written permission from the Revenue Minister. The Saffron Act of 2007 reinforces these restrictions and imposes severe penalties, including imprisonment for up to ten years and fines of ten thousand rupees, for violations of saffron land usage regulations.
