Srinagar, Oct 21: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Wednesday increased the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns, including Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000, following prolonged protests.
The enhanced stipend will be applicable retrospectively from October 1, 2026, according to Government Order No. 747-JK(HME) of 2026 issued by the Health and Medical Education Department following approval from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
The order states that sanction has been accorded to the enhancement of the monthly stipend payable to MBBS and BDS interns, including FMGs, across the Union Territory.
The revision raises the monthly stipend by Rs 12,700, more than doubling the existing amount, and comes after interns across Jammu and Kashmir launched protests, including an indefinite strike, demanding the fulfilment of the government’s assurance on the increase.
The interns had been pressing for an enhancement of their monthly stipend, with the delay in implementing the promised revision triggering prolonged agitation.
The government order formalises the increase and sets October 1 as the effective date for payment of the revised stipend.
