At least 23 army personnel were being washed away after a cloud burst triggered by a flash flood hit North Sikkim’s Lhonak Lake and Teesta River in Lachen valley on Wednesday with officials saying that the camps and vehicles were submerged.
Defence spokesperson Lt. Col Mahendra Rawat said that twenty-three army personnel have been reported missing and 41 vehicles submerged under the slush, adding that search operations are underway.
Border Road Organisation (BRO) has already launched rescue operations and 80 locals have been safely evacuated so far, he said.
