Udhampur: After 60 houses developed cracks in Pir Panchal’s Ramban, now the Tandhar village of Chenani area along the Jammu-Srinagar highway, girded by Shivalik mountain range, has reported land subsidence, affecting three houses.
According to reports, the land adjacent to a stream witnessed severe land subsidence with three houses developing both minor and major cracks in the Tandhar village.
Other reports suggest that an area of 2.5 acres with 15-20 homes has also reported subsidence.
It is pertinent to mention that the government of India is working to shorten the travel time between Jammu and Srinagar from 9-10 hours to 4-5 hours by constructing more tunnels, bridges, and viaducts. But residents and experts blame extensive tunneling, excavation, and bridge construction in the eco-fragile Himalayas as potential causes of the land subsidence.
