Srinagar, May 5 — A woman died after being sexually allegedly assaulted by a group of intoxicated men in the Nishat area of Srinagar late Sunday evening, officials said.
Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the incident.
The woman, originally from Reasi and currently residing in Nishat, was attacked near the Water Works Road, according to an official.
“She sustained injuries during the assault and was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead,” the official said.
The four accused were reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crime.
Their identities have not yet been disclosed by police, who confirmed their arrest and said an investigation is underway.
It is pertinent to mention that this is the first such case reported in the Kashmir region, as politicians, civil society groups, and local residents have previously and repeatedly called for a ban on alcohol, citing the region’s Muslim-majority character and cultural implications.
