Kishtwar, Jan 11 — A 16-year-old boy was killed late Saturday after a rifle held by his father, a Village Defence Guard (VDG), went off accidentally at their home in the Chenab region’s Kishtwar district, police said.
The victim, Anuj Kumar, was struck by a bullet around 9:30 pm inside the family residence at Loyee Dhar village of Mughal Maidan. He died on the spot.
“Pyare Lal was cleaning his service rifle when it discharged,” a police officer said. “The round hit his son Anuj, who was nearby.”
A police team reached the house shortly after the incident and shifted the Class 10 student to Chatroo hospital, where a post-mortem is being conducted.
“The weapon has been seized for forensic examination and inquest proceedings are underway,” the officer said. “We are also recording statements of family members to establish the exact sequence of events.”
Police said further legal action will follow based on the outcome of the investigation.
